With September being “National Yoga Month,” it’s the perfect time to become familiar with the many wonderful benefits of yoga. By taking the time to practice yoga on a consistent basis, one connects with (and steadily improves) their own physical stamina, flexibility, balance and inner peace. This can have a profound trickle effect into all areas of life! While it is true that the yoga asanas (poses) intend to prepare the body for the stillness of meditation, an array of additional benefits manifest through the practice of yoga. These benefits are more directly related to navigating and managing all the various responsibilities of daily modern life with increased ease and grace.
We dovetail into the celebration of yoga month after the passing of the blessed teacher and yogi, B.K.S. Iyenger a few weeks ago, at the age of 95. Iyenger is the individual who is most responsible for bringing the sacred practice of yoga to the West. He introduced the ancient ways of correct living through asana (yoga poses) and pranayama (breathing practices) to Western culture. Earlier in his life, B.K.S. Iyengar was asked why he practices yoga. His reply, “So I can die majestically.”
Iynegar was said to be about 15 years old when his brother-in-law introduced him to yoga, with the intention of improving his health. Although they spent only about two weeks focusing on yoga, Iynegar credits those days as a turning point in life, as they determined the entire life path and personal development.
I hope to inspire everyone in my yoga classes at L’Auberge not only to become intrigued with the practice of yoga for the long-term purpose of dying majestically, but to also to enjoy the rewards here in the now. Beginning a yoga practice, and sticking with it, can be a launching pad for making little changes in your life one step at a time. Regular practice of yoga creates a new, healthier and holistic experience within daily life.
So why not give it a try, show up on a yoga mat, take a class or follow a guided video? Find a style and a teacher that intrigues you, be curious about the practice, and see where a few sessions of yoga lead you on your continued life journey and path.
