In observance of January 16, 1920, the day prohibition officially began, we offer a brief history review and a cocktail to celebrate its failure.
Prohibition Abbreviated History
Once the 18th amendment was signed (prohibiting the “manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors”), the country had one year to get ready for prohibition. Many believed it wouldn’t go through and something would come up to stop the law, but it became clear in the first few days of 1920 that prohibition would happen. From new year’s eve to January 16th, 1920 there were parties held to drink up the remaining alcohol. However, to quote The New York Times, “in 1920, Prohibition went into effect, but America partied on.”
Harry Craddock: A Mixologist of his Time
Harry Craddock was a United States citizen who left during Prohibition and joined the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel, London, in 1920. Craddock was one of the most famous cocktail barmen of the 1920s and 1930s. Craddock’s The Savoy Cocktail Book was published in 1930, and is still in print today. Craddock invented a number of classic cocktails, including the famous Corpse Reviver #2 and possibly including the White Lady, and popularized the Dry Martini.
Throughout January a nod to the Corpse Reviver #2 will be served at Etch Kitchen & Bar, the Red Rock Revival. Popularized by the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock, this classic cocktail is part of a succession of “Corpse Revivers” originally devised as a hangover cure. An ice-cold nip of this elixir is refreshing, astringent, and strong enough to perk up the senses—reviving, indeed.
