International Peace Day

Return to Blog Page

An art installation by artist Shey Khandro called

This Saturday, September 21st, we are taking time to reflect on International Peace Day. Set on our creekside lawn at 9:30 am we invite locals and guests alike to participate in a meditation led by painter and sculptor Sherab (Shey) Khandro who wishes to inspire the hearts and minds of others.

Following the creekside meditation, we encourage you to engage with Shey as she paints on property as part of our Artist in Residence program. Shey is one of a handful of early western artists to receive formal training from Buddhist masters in exile in the US, bringing forth traditional sacred art in the way it has been done in Tibet for centuries. Using the neo-impressionist style of pointillism in her paintings, tiny dots of color create vibrant imagery; each stroke of the brush holds the intention of compassion to end suffering in the world.

Everyday Peace Art Exhibition

Resident art curator Linda Goldenstein of Goldenstein Gallery has created an art exhibit at L’Auberge celebrating Everyday Peace. This exhibit includes paintings and sculptures including two bronze sculptures by Shey Khandro.  While at the hotel, we invite you to explore the grounds to experience the many pieces of art both inside and out. Part of the Everyday Peace exhibit, the “Amitabha: Red Buddha of Infinite Light” is found placed outside the fitness center. Also, the popular “Wheel of Compassion” is found in the Peace Garden at L’Auberge. Guests are invited to turn the Wheel clockwise to release over 1 billion prayers for peace, love and compassion.

Peace Day Notes of Interest

2019 marks the 38th Anniversary of the International Day of Peace, established in 1981 by the United Nations. Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.  On September 21, 2019, the Secretary-General of the United Nations will celebrate the Day in the Peace Garden at United Nations Headquarters by ringing the Japanese Peace Bell and observing a minute of silence.

In 2012 the city of Sedona was honored to receive a proclamation from the United Nations making Sedona the 35th International City of Peace.  In the past four years nearly 100 others have been added across the globe. The Goldenstein Gallery’s “Everyday Peace” exhibit is one of several Sedona City of Peace events.  “I believe all of our artist’s pieces have a peaceful intention that is realized by the artist as they create and by the viewer when they experience the piece. In this way art is very healing,” says Linda Goldenstein.

Like no other place on earth, Sedona is a celebration of nature and culture, quiet wisdom and bursts of adrenaline. L’Auberge de Sedona is at the center of it all, connecting guests to Sedona’s various wonders through a special palette of handcrafted experiences. We look forward to welcoming to our creekside oasis in celebrate on International Day of Peace.
