Incorporating productivity tips at home, work and during business travel

Between busy home and work lives, there never seems to be enough time to accomplish everything on one’s to-do list. Once you factor in honey-do lists, extracurricular, errands and life’s other important obligations, it is only natural to become overwhelmed and wonder how everything can be accomplished in a reasonable time frame.

Sit back and relax. Ph.D, Devani Paige, a renowned yoga and meditation instructor at L’Auberge de Sedona, offers tips to help ease the pressure and make the most out of the time available. This can apply to those who work in the home, out of the home, are caring for children and family members, etc. Her productive meeting tips can also help those on business retreats and sitting through corporate meetings.

Breathing:

To assist in creating amazing results with regards to productivity, it is highly beneficial to stay centered throughout the workday with intermittent one-minute breath awareness meditations. Check-in with your posture regularly. Practice sitting straight and tall with the spine while relaxing the shoulders, neck and jaw.

Try this excercise: Set a timer for one minute, close the eyes, and stay focused on the rhythm of your natural flowing breath. By simply observing each inhale and each exhale you permit yourself to surrender for one minute into being fully present. When the timer chimes, open the eyes and start fresh again with the next task at hand. Repeat often throughout the day. This exercise can be done before or after meetings, if you are unable to complete it consistently throughout the day. For those staying at L’Auberge, we recommend connecting with nature during this exercise by doing it on your deck or balcony.

Gentle Movement:

Another great way to boost productivity at work (for example during leadership retreats and board meetings) or at home, is to carve out time to focus on stretching and moving the body. It is ideal to take time for gentle movement throughout the day, but if it is not possible, before and after work are good options to begin incorporating this exercise.

Try this exercise: Either sitting in a chair or standing up, reach the arms overhead, interlace the fingers, and lean to the right. Come back through center and then lean to the left. Repeat once more. Adding in a few gentle neck rolls, shoulder circles and wrist circles throughout the workday can make a huge impact on how the body feels and responds to stress. Over time this practice will actually improve our posture and how we hold ourselves, thus, allowing one to focus more fully on work production while feeling strong and capable.
